#ChineseFoodiesofIG: Chris Yang of Heń-zhì

This is part of an ongoing series of interviews I’m doing with my favourite Chinese foodies that I follow on Instagram. Come and follow the #ChineseFoodiesofIG hashtag on Instagram and leave a comment showing your support for these talented folk!

Where are you from? Where are you really from?

Bay Area, California. Both my parents are born and raised in Taiwan. My dad's parents are both Cantonese, but both born and raised in Kobe, Japan then moved to Taiwan in 1945. My mom's parents are from Zhejiang, China and moved to Taiwan after the war in 1949.

What does home taste like?

Home is my mom's tomato and scrambled eggs with chinese pickled radish. Super simple, but it’s what I crave whenever I visit home.

Rice or noodles?

Rice 100%.

Share a food memory:

I distinctly remember my first time in Taiwan as a kid going to a night market after visiting a temple. The bombardment of smells, sights and noises from street vendors and hawkers will always be one of my favorite memories.

Who's your Chinese food legend?

Cecelia Chiang

Most underrated Chinese ingredient:

Douchi, or fermented black bean.

Dream dinner party guests:

Questlove, The Cast of "The Office", Seth Rogan, Anthony Bourdain, The Fab Five (What an interesting dinner party that would be!)

What’s in your fridge?

Kewpie mayo....lots of it... Lao Gan Ma anything! There is always some sort of ferment going in my fridge. At this current time, I have fermented chili peppers, a couple different ume projects and a koji project.

Know any good Chinese restaurants?

Favorites right now in the Bay Area are Mister Jiu's/Moongate Lounge, Sam Wo, DUMPLING TIME!!!

What would you like to tell the world about Chinese food?

Always ask for the Chinese menu when going to a Chinese restaurant.
